Join our new programme for care-experienced journalists

We’re inviting early career or aspiring journalists from a care-experienced (including adoption) background to join a ten week programme we are running in 2024 to help boost their journalism career prospects.

The programme is free and a mix of in-person and virtual.

What is Journalism Cares?

Journalism Cares is a unique and new programme for care experienced young people, to support their ambitions to get into journalism.

The programme is for care experienced people who have an interest in journalism for:

  • 1-2-1 individual mentoring from a senior journalist who works in an area they have an interest in;
  • Two newsroom visits and an opportunity to shadow a working newsroom;
  • Fortnightly masterclasses focused on journalism skills such as interviewing techniques, research tools, effective copywriting, using social media etc;
  • CV and portfolio help from newsroom managers and recruiters;
  • And all of the networking and other opportunities that come from being a John Schofield Trust Fellow.

Who is eligible to take part?

We are asking that anyone who applies:

  • Is over 18 at the time of applying and is based in the UK or Ireland;
  • Has a passion and interest in journalism. No professional experience is necessary;
  • Has experienced 3 or more months before the age of 18 in care. This incorporates all type of care including foster, adoption and kinship.

When and where is the programme?

We will confirm details of the programme in January, however it will be ten weeks long, and will likely start in mid-April and finish in June. There will be two in-person events at the beginning and end of the programme, based in London. If you are coming from outside of London all expenses will be covered. During the ten weeks you will have virtual or in person meetings with your mentor on a fortnightly basis.

Interested?

It takes 5 minutes to apply. This is not a job application – we are not trying to catch you out and there is no test for you to pass. The application form is so we can gain an understanding of what experience you have already, and what kind of mentor you would find it useful to be matched with.
