“I can’t wait for this to be what I do everyday!” – student Mahima Abedin (2023) visits Channel 4

Fellow Mahima Abedin (2023) visited the Channel 4 newsroom for the day, as part of the Trust’s new student programme.

Mahima was invited to the newsroom after Emma Maxwell, a Senior Producer at Channel 4 News, spotted her interviewing Marianna Spring at the Trust’s day of Masterclasses in June 2023.

Mahima, an undergraduate journalism student from the University of Kent, talked us through her day: “I started off my day by heading to the London Office in time for the morning meeting. My day consisted of listening in to the meetings, shadowing Emma, watching in on an edit and going through to the gallery to watch how the evening programme is broadcast at 7pm.

“Thanks to Emma and the John Schofield Trust’s masterclass where I met her, I was able to meet the wonderful team at Channel 4 where I spoke and connected with amazing journalists who answered all my questions about the industry and how everything works in the newsroom, not to mention the helpful tips I was given too.

“I’m so grateful I was given this opportunity to go in for the day. Seeing a thriving newsroom along with brilliant journalists has only fuelled my hunger to become part of this incredible industry. There is no doubt that I will be jumping at every opportunity that comes my way to gain all the experience I need especially after experiencing a day at Channel 4.”

Mahima is mentored by Merlyn Thomas from the BBC in the pilot year of the student mentoring Fellowship.
