Mentee Kayleen Devlin will soon be joining the BBC’s disinformation unit as a senior journalist, and has just produced her first BBC Outlook documentary.
Kayleen writes: ‘In early July I’ll begin an attachment with the disinformation unit at BBC Monitoring. As we’ve seen through some of the great work done by the wider team during the COVID-19 pandemic, mis- and disinformation pose a real threat to society. So I’m hugely excited to be joining them, and to put to use some of the data skills I’ve been developing.
‘My mentor, Andrew Dagnell, has been so fantastic throughout this whole process, both in keeping me motivated and helping me prep before the interview, as well as offering me advice after! Having that guidance made all the difference.
‘This has also come at a time when I’ve just completed my first audio project for BBC Outlook – a show I love. It’s a story about the unlikely friendship that developed (and was the subject of a film) between a painter and the man who stole her paintings, and it’s been the perfect project to get stuck into before I delve into disinformation rabbit holes!’
