Journalism student Stuart, a Fellow this year on our first ever mentoring scheme for undergraduates, hasn’t wasted any time in getting stuck in. The Sports Journalism student at UCLan offered a helping hand to his mentor, Raphael Honigstein, and is gaining valuable practical work experience in the industry as a result.
Raphael presents a weekly podcast on German football with co-host Christoph Biermann, Beer and Honey, and Stuart has been helping behind the scenes.
He described his role for us: “Raphael produces a weekly podcast on the Bundesliga in English and he wanted more publicity for it so he asked me to take over the social media side of the podcast.
Firstly, I made Twitter and Youtube accounts for the Podcast so that it has a digital platform to post clips and information. After Raphael and Christoph record the podcast on a Monday they send me the recording so I can make short clips to go out on Twitter – to entice viewers to watch the full podcast and subscribe.
I also then make longer videos, 5-10 minutes long, to go out on the YouTube channel.”
Stuart has enjoyed the experience so far and feels it’s enhancing his journalism skills and preparing him for work in the industry: “The whole experience has improved my editing skills in terms of video and audio. It has given me extra responsibility as I’m running the social media account based on the work of a highly respected journalist, so I have to make sure I double check everything and don’t make any mistakes.
It has also given me added confidence that I can work in the world of journalism and I can deal with the pressure of added responsibility.”
