Ruby Smith (2023), a student Fellow at Liverpool John Moores University, has published her first ever story – based on a rogue trader scamming a pensioner in Liverpool. The piece was published in the Liverpool Echo, where Ruby is an intern.


Emma Ward (2023) has published her first interview feature in The Galway Advertiser, focused on the first Irish traveller to receive an honorary degree at the University of Galway. This was also the first piece Emma has published at the newspaper as part of her work experience there.

Maria Zaccaro (2022) has joined the BBC Investigations Unit in the South as a Senior Journalist Reporter. She commented, “looking forward to working with a very talented team and telling impactful stories.”


Victoria Elms (2023) has joined Sky News’ foreign team as Deputy Foreign News Editor. She will on attachment from Sky’s Data and Forensic Unit. She said, “it’s been an incredible few years working with the best colleagues on stories I’m really proud of. But I’m super excited for the new challenge… and what a time for it too.”


Jonny Lambe (2023), a student Fellow at LJMU and also a reporter on the Liverpool Echo’s Community Scheme, has published two pieces covering local football. He told us “being a part of the Liverpool Echo Community reporter scheme has been an incredible experience so far and I have learnt so much in such a short space of time. Ashni Lakhani
Ashni Lakhani (2021) has left the BBC after seven years to work as a freelance journalist in Dubai. She was one of the BBC’s youngest self-shooting producers and directors, and has produced investigative films for Panorama, BBC Three, and BBC News. Ashni was shortlisted for Young Journalist of the Year by the Society of Editors earlier this year. Ashni commented, “the support I’ve received [at the BBC] has been nothing short of humbling. I’ve been encouraged to pursue difficult stories, mentored by empathetic editors and built friendships with colleague that will and have lasted a lifetime.”

Hamish Auskerry (2022) has been formally congratulated by the Scottish Parliament after being named Wales’ ‘Young Journalist of the Year’ by the Journalism Charity, for his work with ITV Cymru/Wales. Hamish is originally from the isle of Auskerry in Orkney, Scotland. He dedicated the award to his mother, saying “I was home-educated until I was 14 by my brilliant mum due to how remote our farm is, so this one is definitely for her!”


Merlyn Thomas (2022) has contributed to a new podcast called ‘The Climate Question,’ looking at the real world harm of climate change disinformation. Merlyn is a journalist in the BBC Verify team. You can listen to the podcast here.


Elizabeth Hearst (2023) was pivotal in helping news networks cover the riots in Dublin, appearing on TalkTV and other stations. She is a news and broadcast journalist for Dublin’s FM104 and Q102, making her well placed to offer insight into the local context to the stabbing and subsequent riots. Elizabeth was also nominated for the ‘Gay Byrne Newcomer of the Year Award’ earlier this month.

Florence Craig (2022) has a new job as Head of Social (Features) at BBC Studios, where she will oversee social content production and strategy for its international features journalism across science, culture, climate and travel. She will work closely with BBC News for US-audience focused work.


Elle Farrell-Kingsley (2023) attended the Microsoft Office in New York to be celebrated as one of the ‘100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics’ last month. She told us “I’m both humbled and honoured to have been recognised and awarded a place on the directory next to so many incredible, inspirational women. Coming from a non-traditional STEM background, I hope this demonstrates how much bringing interdisciplinary thinking is not just important but essential in the wider AI ethics discussion!”


Josh Sandiford (2023) has joined BBC News in the West Midlands where he will be covering stories across the region with the broadcaster’s online news team in Birmingham. Josh has been shortlisted for two national awards in the past year, including ‘Young Journalist of the Year’ at the Society of Editors Media Freedom Awards, and ‘Young Journalist of the Year’ at the Regional Press Awards.
