Charlie’s story, which appeared as a feature in the publication in April, centred round an investigation into the horrifying rise of DIY dentistry.
Charlie explains: “I had been following this story for a while but it was challenging to produce – so few people were willing to share their experiences as they felt so ashamed. In most cases, a lack of initial treatment just spiraled into a nightmarish scenario. Their dental problems impacted every area of life; and, as one interviewee observed, the underlying issues predate the pandemic.”
Despite the challenges, Charlie found the process satisfying: “I enjoyed investigating the complexities of the story, but sadly found no easy conclusion. I hope it opens people’s eyes to an area of healthcare which has been disregarded by successive governments, and the effects of cumulative years of neglect.”
