Charlene Rodrigues (2023) on hope from the rubble in Turkey

2023 Fellow Charlene reported that a Yemeni mother gave birth to a baby girl ten hours after being pulled from the rubble of her home, hit by the recent earthquake in Turkey.

Charlene collaborated with aid workers on the ground, researched and wrote the piece for BBC World. It covered the plight of resettled Yemeni people caught in the earthquake after having suffered war in their home country; and of communities in the area pulling together in the wake of the natural disaster. On compiling the report, Charlene says, “Many distressing details emerged in the aftermath of the Turkey-Syria earthquake. I wanted to report how Yemenis relived the horrors of a natural disaster after fleeing eight years of war.

I also highlighted their faith and hope amid the tragedy, with Yemeni and Turkish communities coming together to support the newborn and her mother.”
