On Friday 30th November, we hosted an unforgettable evening at ITN on Gray’s Inn Road, bringing together mentees, mentors, and supporters from across the journalism industry. The event, hosted by Rob Osborne, ITV Wales Correspondent, featured powerful stories, meaningful connections, and a keynote speech by BBC broadcaster Clive Myrie.
Rob Osborne, who began his involvement with the Trust as a mentee, shared his inspiring progression to mentor and now trustee. His reflections showcased the life-changing impact of the Trust’s mentoring program, which nurtures the careers of aspiring journalists and strengthens the foundation of quality journalism.
The keynote address by Clive Myrie was a highlight of the evening. Born in Bolton to parents from the Windrush generation, Clive spoke about the invaluable role mentors played in his success and why initiatives like the John Schofield Trust are crucial for fostering the next generation of diverse and talented journalists. His words resonated deeply, reminding everyone of the transformative power of storytelling and support.
The evening also featured inspiring accounts from both Fellows and Senior Fellows of the Trust, who shared their personal journeys and experiences. These stories highlighted the profound impact of mentorship in navigating the challenges of the journalism industry, building confidence, and seizing opportunities.
In addition to the speeches, the event provided a unique space for networking. Fellows engaged with their peers and seasoned professionals, fostering relationships that will undoubtedly shape their careers.
The reception was a testament to the Trust’s commitment to supporting aspiring journalists. It reinforced the importance of mentorship, diversity, and community in ensuring the future of responsible journalism.
