We are proud to report that Anand Shukla, the outgoing CEO of Brightside, has joined our board as a trustee.
In 2018, the John Schofield Trust commissioned the mentoring charity, Brightside, to host our online scheme for sixth formers. Since then, we have worked closely with Anand, who brings 10 years’ experience of leading organisations which focus on education, social mobility and childcare. Anand’s insight and understanding of social mobility issues is particularly welcome, especially today when the Social Mobility Commission publishes its disappointing findings on the lack of action the government has made against the Commission’s recommendations.
Anand says: ‘I have worked closely with the John Schofield Trust for the last couple of years, and have been bowled over by the work they do. I am joining their board because I believe their mission is more important than ever in these divided times. Journalism is about telling people’s stories. If the media doesn’t reflect the diverse voices, views and perspectives of the country, then disadvantaged communities will be continue to be ignored and neglected.’
Founder Susannah Schofield adds: ‘I am thrilled that Anand has joined the board after being a valued critical friend and champion of the Trust. Anand brings solutions to the table and we are delighted to have him on our team as we work to ensure young people and early career journalists who were born without privilege can access and navigate the UK news industry. Now, more than ever, we need them in our newsrooms.’
